'It Took Too Long To Get You' (Essential Records 2004)
We knew these guys were from Melbourne the second we put the cd in. 'It Took Too Long To Get You' starts with a sample of some old 50's crooner, then the bongos kick in followed by a country guitar strum and the lead vocals. A heavy American accent is excused considering the style - well-produced and high-spirited country music, complete with piano, female backing vocals and a low n' sexy lead guitar riff. There's only one song on this extremely well-presented radio-only digi-pack that comes with the cutest 'bio' we've ever seen: a full-colour credit card sized one with minimal information and yummy orange thread stitching it together. Either these guys have a major label behind them or are very clued-in on how to present themselves. I'll bet on the latter. We even got a colour sticker. Woo-hoo! cliffy
'It Took Too Long To Get You' is a joy to the ear and wouldn't it be great if this song could top the charts? We'd be dancing and singing along in the supermarket aisle. The Cliffy Davis Goodtime Band are a five-piece band who originally met at The University of Ballarat and by 2000 had moved to Melbourne. Over the last few years they have released a couple of EPs and a single and 'It Took Too Long To Get You' is from the forthcoming album Baby That Was A Beautiful Punch. We look forward to hearing more. -ND
