SHOOT THE GENIE 3 Track Sampler

ARE SHOOT THE GENIE THE ULTIMATE BIG DAY OUT BAND?

Yes, we think so.

After listening to their three track sampler, I was having visions of the kids all sweaty and excited in their Breeders'n'Weezer teeshirts, rockin' and rollin' en masse to this band. From the opening one-two hit of the tom of 'Perfect Day', straight into the singing, right through to the breakdown verse at the end of 'Leave It Lying', it's an action-packed ride from a band who seem to create instant pop-purchases with a sense of tough fun and effortless energy. Or is that energetic effortlessness?

A four-piece from Melbourne and originally called Atreyu (name change due to a Californian metal band), Shoot The Genie are Kristy on lead vocals and guitar; Claire on bass and vocals; Melissa on the drums and 'newbie' Daniel on guitar. They released the Fabulous Secrets Revealed cd (under the Atreyu name) in 2001.

'Perfect Day' has a wicked wah solo which burnsbabyburns right up to the end of the song then BAM! straight into 'Rendezvous'. Verse BAM! a bridge that could be a chorus BAM! into a helluva chorus. It's impossible not to see a few thousand punters bouncing up and down to Shoot The Genie at the next Homebake Big Day Out Come Together Meredith Somersault On The Grass - any or all of the Aussie music festivals coming your way this summer.

Great guitar hooks abound throughout all the songs, accompanying a tight and punchy rhythm section, topped off by a singer with a tough and sexy voice that both breaks and swoons in all the right places. 'Leave It Lying' gives us a monster riff as an intro, drops back a gear to lead into a beautiful vocal melody before going into yet another bridge that could easily be a chorus. After another round of this we finally get to the chorus which is a little ripper! What a band! It's impossible to pick a favourite from these three songs by a band that should be touring nationally this weekend - if I had my way.

Shoot The Genie are currently putting finishing touches on their new EP which will be released early 2006. -SH
