Here’s the perfect Summer cd (please note: this is a proper release, not a demo). The minute you put it on, you can feel the sun, the beach, the colours of the rainbow. And I had all weekend to feel the warmth, as I took this cd (okay, transferred to my nano) and swam between the flags, so to speak, even though I was bushwalking (yes, in this heat!) with my powerpoppin’ boyfriend who became quite envious of the music made by The Flying Colours. Yes, blame the power of a new boyfriend to keep me away from Half A Cow’s “Sweet Sixteenth” show at the Annandale on Sunday evening. So this was my way of getting back. My head glued to the Flying Colours.
These three fine, upstanding young men are from Sydney’s inner west. The band is made up of Phil Harding (guitar, vocals), Chris Gray (bass, organ, vocals) and Ed David (drums). The first track ‘Everybody’s Looking’ is the one I had stuck in my head while bushwalking (me singing along, watching BF get redder and redder and it wasn’t just from the heat!). It’s one helluva upbeat catchy song with harmonies galore - flying colours for sure. ‘Movie Happy’ namechecks Woody Allen and Humphrey Bogart. Not sure what it’s all about but I liked it, reminded me of Perth’s Turnstyle with the Casio bopping away.
The Flying Colours Everybody’s Looking EP was self-released in August 2006 and available direct from the band. Check it out. - SH
