Subtle. Sweet. Melancholic. Brooding. Moody. And delicate. These are the words that popped into my head when I had listened to the five songs sent to us by Brisbane duo, the Siestas. And after quite a few listens one more word. Memorable.
Brock Kenzler (the guitarist, songwriter) and Jess Etcell (the singer, occasional clarinet) met via an ad Brock placed in a music magazine and have been playing together since sometime in 2006.
It's minimal music - delicate picking on the guitar and slightly world-weary vocals with a tone that matched the sentiment of the lyrics.
Here is another example - on these songs, at least - where the boy has written the songs for the girl to sing. It's worked in the past for the Honeys, Mazzy Star and the Lighthouse Keepers and it definitely works here. Beautiful melodies weave their way out of all five tracks that make the listener want to start the disc all over. Which we do again and again. -ND
