Old Nick is the project of Sam Aspden (drums, vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards) and Cameron Stevens (guitar, vocals, keyboards) and they have performed live in and around Melbourne. Sam, who engineered and produced these five tracks, has since moved to Wollongong. One listen to these 'selections from 666' and you'll want Sam to fly back to Melbourne and book a world tour with partner Cameron. All songs are great - you can hear the sincerity and honestly in their skewed vision of heavy, psychedelic rock and roll. These guys are no fakes. They know what they are doing and they mean it, man. Even their version of Cat Stevens' 'If You Wanna Sing Out' is wrapped in their own brand of trippy guitars and drums.
Opening song 'The Ground' is a mutated take on Pink Floyd's 'Money' riff and aggressive lyrics ('hit me with that fucking sound, grab your partner, hit the ground') that reveal that we are in for a dark ride with Old Nick. 'Armageddon' is The Anthem For The End Of The World, luring you in with its pleading, desperate yet tough vocals and constant handclaps and sing-a-long chorus. Favourite track for me is 'Psychopath' a slow-burner psyche-out complete with backwards guitars swirling around. The playing by Old Nick is perfect - all songs have great guitars either riffing or noodling away and the fuzz-bass in 'The Ground' gets a special prize. Sam is currently working on a third Old Nick album. -ND
