We've been hearing lots of great new music lately that has been sent to Half A Cow. It's refreshing to know that there are still loads of bands and singers enthused enough to get up off the couch and MAKE MUSIC. Woah, didn't mean to yell then but it is exciting that lot of acts out there are wanting their music heard. Here at Half A Cow we'd love to help out more than we possibly can, but we can't do everything, so letting you know about another TOP BAND is the least we can do!
Which brings us to the BataScouts, a very new band from Queensland's Sunshine Coast. There are three songs here and they are all great. The first song 'Crazy Daisy' is tough yet poppy and is so assured, so cool, so COMPLETE (see, I am excited)…it's amazing that this band is just starting out. Surely the band members are alien rockstars from a nearby silver planet teasing us with a non de plume. The fact that there are no photos of the band makes us a little suspicious. Does Steve Kilbey have four sons sunning it up, up North?
If there's one band the BataScouts sound like it's Sweden's The Soundtrack Of Our Lives – especially the vocals and the overall sixties-sex-rock feel of all the songs. Which reminds me of another band: the late, great Sidewinder featuring the brothers Craft. If you were able to mix TSOOL and Sidewinder together, the slightly psychedelic smoothie poured out would sound a bit like BataScouts. And that's high praise.
Disclaimer: I wore Bata Scouts to school in the early 70s – complete with the paw prints on the sole and the compass in the heel. They were cool, too. -ND
