These four guys - who call themselves Line Drawings - seem very sure of themselves. There is a sense of confidence in what they do, from the assured lead vocal to the balance between the classic rock line-up of two guitars, bass and drums. This is right up my alley.
It all made sense when I read the accompanying bio. The band formed in 2007 out of the ashes of much-loved and respected Sydney band Ides of Space, who achieved considerable success, on an independent level, in Australia and the USA.
Line Drawings are Patrick Haid on guitar and vocals, Mark Ayoub on guitar, David The on bass and Sam Miller on drums. The six songs on this cd were recorded by Anthony The, who is also the ex-Ides of Space drummer and has also engineered recordings for fellow Sydney bands Youth Group and the Vines. Scanning the cd cover, I see some notable Sydneysiders feature on the songs- David Challinor (from whose band escapes me at the time of writing) and Bruno 'Peabody' Brayovic plays extra guitar on 'Concrete Gardening' and Robert F. Cranny plays some wonderful keyboards on 'Whatever Side'.
Funny enough, on first listen, the opening song 'Atmosphere Flies' put me off really getting into this cd, thinking: uh oh mid-90s mathrock. It's now since grown on me, as have all the songs, especially the gorgeous 'Talking Out Of Tune'.
If it were 1996 again, I'd say one or two of the Majors, looking for their indie-cross-over-kids, would have courted these guys. – SH
