new single from Nicola Schultz – Book of Sails/A Lot of Love
Written, self-produced and self-mixed by Nicola Schultz. Mastered by William Bowden 2025.
The latest single from Nicola Schultz, former bassplayer from Sydney’s Swirl, taken from her eighth solo album, due out on Half A Cow in 2025.
Reflecting on the song-writing process, Nicola says, “Two songs from my upcoming album were left to marinate while on a six-week overseas sojourn which began in late November 2024.
Musical inspiration flooded my way from the start, bumping into a harpist ferrying her instrument to the lift in our Singapore hotel where we struck up a conversation. After her set in the foyer downstairs, I was led next door into an art gallery where I noticed a Chinese harp on display and recorded its individual strings. These were later sampled and included as a bass addition on ‘A Lot of Love’.”
The wave of music continued with a string quartet playing Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in St Martin in the Fields in London and a next level performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto at the Bastille Opera House in Paris. Could it get any better than this?”
Edinburgh then provided a great counterbalance with a communal singalong of ‘Dirty Old Town’ at the iconic Royal Oak followed by two university students who played a couple of tunes – the young guy moved us with a traditional Scottish song, while the girl’s gentle rendition of Boney M’s Rasputin really appealed to me.”
Next stop was Manchester which surprised with a kindly tour from one of the gentlemen at The Salford Lads Club where The Smith’s iconic photo for the gatefold sleeve of their album The Queen is Dead was taken. Then the West End musical Back to the Future as our finale left me smiling.”
After all these musical experiences travelling across the world, ‘Book of Sails’ has an additional intro section.”
